Catrina workshop in Mexico City.

Catrinas are among the most iconic pieces of Mexican art associated with the Day of the Dead; however, through our workshop—offered on select dates—you can create your own Catrina from scratch and take it home with you. The workshop lasts approximately four hours and includes all materials, as well as instruction and guidance from a professional Mexican artist with over 20 years of experience. Instead of simply buying Mexican art, why not create it yourself and take it home? The finished Catrinas stand about 20 cm tall, making them perfect for travel. We offer this workshop on a scheduled basis and also for private groups.

Mexican catrina workshop dia de muertos

Discover one of Mexico's most iconic Day of the Dead traditions at our Catrina Workshop at Coco's Workshops Mexico. In a small, friendly group, you will create and decorate your own Catrina using traditional carton techniques (Mexican papier-mâché). Catrinas are elegant skeleton figures that have become one of the most recognizable forms of Mexican folk art associated with the Day of the Dead. Inspired by "La Catrina," they remind us that death is a shared experience—transcending wealth and social status—while celebrating life, memory, and Mexican culture through creativity, color, and humor. During the workshop, each participant can customize their Catrina from head to toe, selecting colors, patterns, clothing, facial details, and decorative elements to give it a unique personality. Your Catrina can be traditional, elegant, colorful, whimsical, or entirely original—no two creations need look alike! Working in a small group allows for personalized guidance as you learn about the history and symbolism behind these fascinating figures. By the end of the experience, you will take home a unique piece of Mexican folk art—handmade by you—and a special memento of the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead in Mexico.
